The scariest part of going to a dentist or getting dental treatment done is the dreaded “needle” !! The thought of someone peering into your mouth and poking a needle in your gums terrorizes children and adults alike. But what if we told you that you do not have to worry about needles anymore? Yes, that’s right !! You can get your anesthesia without any needles now!

What Is An Anesthesia Wand?

Generally, anesthesia is given by a dentist with an injection before any dental treatment to numb an area so that you do not feel any pain during the procedure. Anesthesia wand is an advanced technology of administering the local anesthesia. It is a wand or pen-like device which uses a computer-controlled dental-injection tool to deliver the anesthesia to numb your tooth. It consists of a pen-like device that is connected to the computer which controls the amount, rate and flow of the anesthetic solution and operated by the dentist using a foot pedal.

On activating the foot pedal, the computer generates an accurate and consistent amount of solution and adjusts the injection pressure according to the density of the issue in such a way that the tissue gets numbed before the injection is inserted.

History of Anesthesia Wand

Needle and injections are the most despised and dreaded part of dentistry. In a bid to break these age-old practices, researchers in the mid-1990s started working on developing better local anesthetic delivery systems that incorporated computer technology in such a way that injections could be made painless. The first Computer-controlled local anesthetic delivery(CCLAD) system was introduced in 1997. Dr. Mark Hochman and his coworkers were the first to show a considerable reduction in pain during injections using the CCLAD system, allowing anesthesia to be administered comfortably to the patient to all areas of the mouth virtually painlessly.

Why Choose Anesthesia Wand

A lot of people dread going to a dentist’s due to a lot of reasons. They either hate the sound of the dental drill or someone peering down their mouths poking needles. Children are particularly terrified of injections and seldom even the sight of one makes them anxious. Injections are commonly used by dentists to provide an anesthesia shot to numb the particular area before starting any procedure. But with the CCLAD technology, you can completely forget needles. No more painful injections. Anesthesia wand is true to its name and does perform like a “magic wand”, giving you needle-free anesthesia shots and facilitating pain-free dental treatment.

Anesthesia Wand Candidates

A lot of people cannot stand the sight of a needle and long syringe going into their mouths and pricking their gums. It is natural to feel anxious about needles as the initial feeling of insertion of an injection can be painful. A lot of people who receive an injection on their very first day visiting a dentist sometimes get traumatized by the needle. This is especially true in the case of children.

Kids are inherently anxious about unknown surroundings and the thought of injection is a nightmare. They can now avail the technology of anesthesia wand at Coquitlam Dental, in turn, have to be never afraid again. Whether you have a needle phobia or not you can always avail our anesthesia wand and experience the magic yourself.

What We Do

Anesthesia wand has 3 components viz. a handpiece which goes into your mouth, a computer control unit and foot pedal attached to it for the dentist to control. The handpiece is a pen-like or wand-like tool that is attached to an anesthetic cartridge. The computer calculates the accurate and consistent amount of solution to be delivered and adjusts the injection pressure according to the tissue it goes into and the foot pedal controls the rate of injection. Essentially, this allows continuous administration of a fixed amount of anesthetic solution at a slow and steady speed.

This reduces pain because of the resistance felt in the tissues, and also as the anesthesia takes effect simultaneously while injecting. Thus the anesthetic is injected into the area of gum that has already been numbed. Owing to this the patient feels virtually no pain or pressure during the injection.

Benefits of Anesthesia Wand

Painless

The computer-controlled mechanism of anesthesia delivery enables your dentist to give you an injection which numbs your gums even before the injection is inserted which makes the entire process virtually painless.

No Needles

The sight of needles can be scary since the anesthesia wand more of a pen-like device instead of a needle poking out of an injection, you do not have to face your fears anymore and have a pleasant anxiety-free experience.

Single Tooth Anesthesia

The device has a targeted delivery of the anesthetic solution, so it numbs only a single tooth instead of your entire mouth. Now you can resume your normal routine and daily work (maybe even go to your office) after your dental appointment.

Comfortable

Since the device releases the anesthetic in a slow and moderated speed, the process is smooth and comfortable without you feeling a thing.

All Procedures

With the anesthesia wand, your dentist can reach all inaccessible areas of your mouth. So all routine procedures like restorations, Root canal treatment, dental cleanings, etc. can be carried out easily. Also, it can be used along with sedation in children to make it an even smoother and pleasant experience.

Does It Have A Needle?

Anesthesia wand is a computer-controlled local anesthetic delivery system that is shaped like a pen or looks like a wand. No needles are protruding out that you can see. It does have a fine needle though, which cannot be seen, and enters the gum after it has been numbed so can hardly be felt. This controlled precise method of delivery allows the injection to be painless and needle-less.

How Does An Anesthesia Wand Work?

Anesthesia wand has 3 components viz. a hand piece which goes into your mouth, a computer control unit and foot pedal attached to it for the dentist to control. The computer calculates the accurate and consistent amount of solution to be delivered and adjusts the injection pressure according to the tissue it goes into and the foot pedal controls the rate of injection. Basically, this allows continuous administration of a small and fixed amount of anesthetic solution at a slow and steady speed. This reduces pain because of the resistance felt in the tissues, and also as the anesthesia takes effect simultaneously while injecting.
